Rushing Through Russia

At the end of January I brought some of my students to Russia for a choir festival in Moscow.  The whole trip was five days, two of them being for travel. The other three days were spent at the school for the festival, on the bus in traffic and at the hotel with a few short outings in between.

The school organized a quick tour of Red Square for all 150 choir members and chaperones.  Our tour guide was either trying to lose us or was trying to keep us warm by speed walking. -Troitskaya Tower

The Christmas lights were still up in late January perhaps to distract from the dismal grey skies.
Since the choir kids stayed in homestays with families from the school in Moscow, Carolina and I got to have the nights off. We spent one of the evenings at White Rabbit which claims a spot on the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.  Pictured above is the tasting menu and the bottle of borodinsky bread scented perfume that we were given during the sniff test portion of the evening.
Friends from Angola, James and Ellie,  who work at the school in Moscow, joined us for dinner.  Here are the first 7 courses of the meal.
The final 8 courses, not at all excessive.  The last course on the bottom right involved a wooden giraffe like statue and chocolates coated in gold that you had to eat in one bite so that they didn’t explode, leaving the bright liquid inside all over you face.

The final meal of the trip was at TGI Fridays in the Moscow airport, a treat for the kids and a reason to spend the emergency cash when our flight back to Bucharest was cancelled.  Maybe TGIF will make it on the 50 best restaurants list someday too.
