January in Ireland

After heading home for Christmas break we did a week long holiday in Ireland on our way back to Bucharest.  While we were there we stayed with Aongus, a friend we met while teaching in Angola.  A real live Irish person.  Aongus’ accent had thickened since he moved back to Ireland so we didn’t really understand much of what he said, but it was sure nice to see him.

We visited the Guinness Factory literally seconds after we landed.

Aongus took us on a walk-about in Wicklow Mountains National Park.

Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Dublin

Rainbows everywhere, though the pots were copper, not gold.

We did a road trip up to Northern Ireland early in the week. In Belfast, we did a Black Cab Tour to learn about the local history. This wall in Belfast still separates the Protestant and Catholic areas of the city, with its gates closing at night.

The Titanic was built in Belfast and left from the port there. Try to find us in this replica of one of the rooms on the Titanic at the Titanic Museum!  This is the only picture of us on this blog so savor it.

The Crown Liquor Saloon in downtown Belfast, renovated in 1885. We only went inside for a second but it was beautiful!

The walk down to Giant’s Causeway was windy, cold, sprinkled with excitement and a hint of sheer terror.

Giants Causeway – basalt columns. The only pic without a bunch of tourists in the way. We could feel their hot breath close behind us though.

Beautiful green countryside with sweater farms

We had quite a few rainy moments in the trip but the rain gave way to lovely skies.

Downtown Londonderry or just Derry to others. Tensions aside, this walled city is so cute! (Just watch out for Mr. Stabby’s bayonet)

A view from the walls of Londonderry/Derry looking out at the political murals representing the history of the troubled region.

More gorgeous skies

One last bit of green countryside

The end, or is it… mainly because we want to go back.
